We have a plethora of events running this weekend, so get your electronic devices/day timers and pens ready!
This week’s Artist in the Window is visual artist, Lori Bagneres. Born in Ontario and now living in North Vancouver, Lori received her art education in France at L’école Nationale des Beaux Arts de Grenoble.
Lori’s new body of work uses of images of crows to explore the continuous cycle of networking in today’s society. The Corvids (the family name for crows) diurnal, or daily cycle, mimics those of humans. In particular, the social behaviors of sharing, adapting, co-operating -and even spying, grieving and remembering who-did-what-to-whom- have been observed. The images of crows, our urban cousins, are layered into surreal settings through the use of mixed media techniques and offer visual explorations of common idioms that tell ironic tales of the ins-and-outs of communicating within our complex social structures.
Getting our wires crossed, Sharing the party line and It’s complicated are titles of paintings currently showing in our shop. Drop by this Saturday, March 31st, between 11-4 to watch Lori work on her composition entitled, Out of the Loop. To see more of Lori’s work, please visit her website, here.

Caede Pungente will also be in the shop this Saturday, March 31st between 1:30-3:30. She will be offering a card-making workshop. This is a perfect opportunity to make customized cards for upcoming birthdays, Mother’s Day, Easter, or for any other event you might be booked to attend. Space is limited, so please call ahead to book your spot at 604-874-7415. Caede’s Cards makes personalized, one-of-a-kind cards using montage techniques and recycled bits. I began working with the Art House Co-op a couple of years ago as a way to take a break from my conceptual art practice that didn’t utilize any one particular medium. They started their slew of fun projects by offering up a sketchbook, a theme and a deadline –and I loved it! The object of this project was to fill a small sketchbook with drawings loosely based on a pre-determined theme. My first sketchbook theme was “inside/outside”, and my niece chose “nightmares”, which I thought was rather brave for a 6 year old. We had about 3 months to fill it, and it was a way for me to get lost in the materiality of pencil and pen. Before the deadline, we send the sketchbooks back, and they go on an exhibition tour around North America. They have a whole bunch of online options too, you can have your sketchbook scanned and included on exhibition, and all of the books are barcoded, so you can see who is looking at yours and if they leave any comments on your work. It’s pretty fun. But mostly I participate because, like knitting, I find drawing a fantastic way to initiate stream of consciousness thought that adds to my conceptual art practice in ways that “thinking” cannot. When new projects are announced in my inbox, I get excited because they signal that it is my time to play with art.
As the years have passed, the Art House Co-op has expanded their fantastic programming, they offer up a plethora of paid programming, from the Sketchbook Project to various painting projects. But last week they started whole set of programming that offered free projects to play with. Every week they send out a new project scope, and this week’s is The Map Project. I invite you to participate, and if you like, post your reactions, thoughts and if you send me photos of your work, or of you working, we’ll do a follow-up gallery post for fun!
Here is the scope taken from the Art House Co-op website:
The Map Project challenges participants to create depictions of both physical and invented locations. Map your backyard, your fears, your personal history or your favorite book, then mail us the results. The only requirement is that your map folds down to a size not larger than 4” x 6”. We’ll exhibit every map we receive in our storefront space, transforming a single location into an atlas of our world. Whether you’re inspired by the precise detail of a geological survey or the whimsy of a childhood treasure map, The Map Project is a chance to translate your world into ink, textile, collage or print.
Rules:
- Sign up by March 15th, go here.
- Any medium is acceptable, including drawing, sewing, collage, printmaking or photography.
- Please make sure that your map can fold into a flat rectangle no larger than 4” x 6”.
- Please print your name clearly on the back of your map.
- Please do not submit a sculpture or 3D object. All maps must fold down flat to be included.
- Please do not use glue, glitter, or other materials that could fall off your work or damage other contributions.
- Please note that submissions will not be returned.
- Please mail your map to:
Brooklyn Art Library
℅ The Map Project
103A N. 3rd St
Brooklyn, NY 11249
- All entries must be postmarked no later than April 30th

Bird on a Wire is functioning as a Pop-up Shop for Cocolico chocolatey confections! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the recent phenomenon of “pop-up shops” in Vancouver (and other hot cities), it’s when seasonal and artisan retailers take over spaces for a limited time. We have seen a few in the neighbourhood when retail real estate companies are filling time between leases, and at Bird in a Wire, we have switched the scale and are now offering Wendy Boys, Pastry Chef Extraordinaire, prime retail space within our store for her wonderful chocolate treats, perhaps only until Valentines Day!
Cocolico by Wendy Boys offers hand-made, small batch chocolates and fine desert sauces. Her ingredients are organic and locally sourced, when possible, and she supports other local businesses.
The products you will find at Bird on a Wire include decadent desert sauces, in three varieties: Salted Butter Caramel, Dark Chocolate Caramel and Raspberry Dark Chocolate Sauce –perfect pairing for a transcendental desert experience! Also a brand new line of four tempting chocolate bars will be launched, combinations of dark or milk chocolate featuring locally sourced fruits and nuts, Australian ginger and almonds. Of course, the infamous “brown box” of Vanilla Salt Caramels with Peanut Butter & Milk Chocolate Crunch will surely drive you mad! And lastly, but not least, the cello box of understated, creamy organic Salted Butter Caramels.
And for your taste-bud pleasure, we have TWO tastings already planned where you can drop by and sample Cocolico treats: tonight, February 2nd, at the Private View between 7-9:30, and Sunday between 2 and 4pm.
See you there!

We are pleased to be hosting Courtney Colbon as our Artist in the Window for this Saturday, January 21st. The youngest artist to be showcased, Courtney is currently a student at Emily Carr University where she focuses on painting and illustration. Originally from the Okanagan Valley, Courtney has already shown at the respected Kelowna Art Gallery. Her subject matter is diverse, reflecting the openness often found in early emerging artists, one that can create a special kind of affect for the viewers, nostalgia, perhaps. Currently, Courtney is working on an illustration, and you will find her at the shoppe, working with graphite and loose graphite. So come by, and visit Courtney this Saturday from 11 to 4, while she works away on her current project.
To see more of Courtney’s work, please visit her website.

Looking for small gifts, sized perfect for stockings or as thanks to the host/ess can be taxing this time of year. Stores are plentiful and offer lots to choose from, but if you are like me, I am usually running to the store on the way to my event and don’t have time to scour the space for the perfect token of my affection. One could offer up the usual holiday tropes of flowers or chocolates; they are easy and always appreciated. But if you are looking to provide a special kind of joy this holiday season, Karen has certainly made things VERY easy for people like (or not so like) me! It was Friday, and as usual, I was dropping by the shop for our usual check-in/meeting on my way to the North Shore for the first of my holiday festivities, and Karen told me about the tree that she had decorated with all things pretty and small, and best yet, easy on the pocket book. Thankfully I had my camera with me and these are some of the things I found:

1. Pocket Full of Posies makes great vintage inspired hair accessories and jewelry. I love these pieces because they resemble Bakelite jewelry. Bakelite is a synthetic material invented around the turn of the twentieth century to imitate shellac, made from the excretion of the lac beetles. A colourful and inexpensive material, it was used widely to make jewelry during the Depression. These accessories are perfect for anyone who has a delicate disposition, or for someone who just likes all things vintage or retro.

2. Consider Firefly Notes’ fridge magnets and match boxes, perfect host/ess gifts! The fridge magnets are strong enough to hold tight any length of grocery list, yet as small as a bottle cap! Their match boxes, which are not shown here, come with tiny decorative images with sparkle frames, an aesthetically pleasing item to have handy for any holiday candle lighting!

3. For a manly gift, we have an Omega shaving brush with shaving soap in a decorative ceramic bowl. These items are both practical and decorative, and are happily VEGAN! These synthetic bristles are the softest available and will turn the morning shaving ritual into a pleasant task.

4. These earrings will be conversation starters, for sure, and provide hours and hours of party conversation as people guess the story that inspired these earrings. You will be propelled the recipient of this gift into being the life of the party, and they will meet their soul mate and live happily ever after! Because, who doesn’t love bug earrings! Phaulet makes more than just bug earrings, you will find a plethora of resin jewelry pieces, all with images that are inspired by Columbian and Latin American Folklore.

5. For the well-mannered eco-warrior, we have beautiful writing sets that will appeal to their tree-hugging side, as they are all made from recycled paper pulp. No trees have been harmed in the making in this gift idea! The package includes pages, envelopes and pretty, golden seals –perfect for writing thank you notes to all of your holiday host/esses of this season! *Postage stamps are not included

We are thrilled to have Robbie Vergara working on his screen printed t-shirts and other textile items as our next Artist in the Window! Also a filmmaker, Robbie has incorporated a wide array of inspiration into his line, and specifically likes to work with 18th and 19th Century Biology drawings. Names like “King of the Raven”, “Happy Bat Face” and “Golden Guns” speak to his perfect blend of bold graphics and surreal imagery. Robbie pulls the ink on a screen to make each individual item so that what looks “the same” is uniquely different, and that process makes these items special in a world of digitally printed items. Wondering what I am talking about? Come down to the store this Saturday, November 26th betweeen 11 and 4 for a look and a chat!
Join Robbie on his Facebook Page here.
