Elaine Simandl – Artist in the Window, this Saturday, March 17th, 11-4

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

We are pleased to announce our upcoming Artist in the Window! Elaine Simandl will be creating hand-drawn greeting cards in the shop this Saturday, March 17th, from 11am – 4pm. If you are not familiar with her work, she actually draws each card individually and there are only 5 of each drawing available. That makes her cards little artworks unto themselves! There are two series of cards that she will be working on, one that consists of delicate, black ink drawings on off-white paper that are inspired by vintage tattoo design. And the other series is black silhouette drawings where she utilized chalkboard paint for a dark, dramatic look. And the fun bit is that you get a piece of chalk to draw on your card!

Elaine is a Vancouver artist who has been crafting forever. Most of what she makes, she makes for herself and her friends. Her paper and stationary products all have original, free-hand drawings on them.

Caede Pungente – Artist in the Window, this Saturday, March 10th, 11-4

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Do you have a Birthday or function that you will be needing a greeting card this month? Well here is a special opportunity to get a unique and personalize greeting card hand made by greeting card designer, Caede Pungente. This Saturday, March 10th, between 11-4, Caede will be in the store and available to make your card on-the-spot with imagery made from found and repurposed materials. She will ask you about your loved-one’s likes and hobbies, and in about 30 minutes, you will have something special! Caede collects all sorts of materials for her cards, specifically fabric, ribbons, old calendars, greeting cards, wrapping paper and all sorts of bits. She uses typical tools of the montage sort, scissors and glue, but also more uncommonly, she employs a sewing machine that  leves behind  long straight stitches or zig zag stitches for a darling touch!

Inspired by watching Caede stitch her cards together? Sign up for her Saturday card making workshop happening on Saturday, March 31. Space is limited, so call the store to book your spot at 604-874-7415.

Great Gifts Do Grow on Trees!

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Looking for small gifts, sized perfect for stockings or as thanks to the host/ess can be taxing this time of year. Stores are plentiful and offer lots to choose from, but if you are like me, I am usually running to the store on the way to my event and don’t have time to scour the space for the perfect token of my affection. One could offer up the usual holiday tropes of flowers or chocolates; they are easy and always appreciated. But if you are looking to provide a special kind of joy this holiday season, Karen has certainly made things VERY easy for people like (or not so like) me!  It was Friday, and as usual, I was dropping by the shop for our usual check-in/meeting on my way to the North Shore for the first of my holiday festivities, and Karen told me about the tree that she had decorated with all things pretty and small, and best yet, easy on the pocket book. Thankfully I had my camera with me and these are some of the things I found:

1. Pocket Full of Posies makes great vintage inspired hair accessories and jewelry. I love these pieces because they resemble Bakelite jewelry. Bakelite is a synthetic material invented around the turn of the twentieth century to imitate shellac, made from the excretion of the lac beetles. A colourful and inexpensive material, it was used widely to make jewelry during the Depression. These accessories are perfect for anyone who has a delicate disposition, or for someone who just likes all things vintage or retro.

2. Consider Firefly Notes’ fridge magnets and match boxes, perfect host/ess gifts! The fridge magnets are strong enough to hold tight any length of grocery list, yet as small as a bottle cap! Their match boxes, which are not shown here, come with tiny decorative images with sparkle frames, an aesthetically pleasing item to have handy for any holiday candle lighting!

3. For a manly gift, we have an Omega shaving brush with shaving soap in a decorative ceramic bowl. These items are both practical and decorative, and are happily VEGAN! These synthetic bristles are the softest available and will turn the morning shaving ritual into a pleasant task.

4. These earrings will be conversation starters, for sure, and provide hours and hours of party conversation as people guess the story that inspired these earrings. You will be propelled the recipient of this gift into being the life of the party, and they will meet their soul mate and live happily ever after! Because, who doesn’t love bug earrings! Phaulet makes more than just bug earrings, you will find a plethora of resin jewelry pieces, all with images that are inspired by Columbian and Latin American Folklore.

5. For the well-mannered eco-warrior, we have beautiful writing sets that will appeal to their tree-hugging side, as they are all made from recycled paper pulp. No trees have been harmed in the making in this gift idea! The package includes pages, envelopes and pretty, golden seals –perfect for writing thank you notes to all of your holiday host/esses of this season! *Postage stamps are not included

Robbie Vergara – Artist in the Window, this Saturday, November 26, 11-4

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

We are thrilled to have Robbie Vergara working on his screen printed t-shirts and other textile items as our next Artist in the Window! Also a filmmaker, Robbie has incorporated a wide array of inspiration into his line, and specifically likes to work with 18th and 19th Century Biology drawings. Names like “King of the Raven”, “Happy Bat Face” and “Golden Guns” speak to his perfect blend of bold graphics and surreal imagery. Robbie pulls the ink on a screen to make each individual item so that what looks “the same” is uniquely different, and that process makes these items special in a world of digitally printed items. Wondering what I am talking about? Come down to the store this Saturday, November 26th betweeen 11 and 4 for a look and a chat!
