Beautiful Jewellery!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

As promised, more pictures of amazing work just in. These photos are of Liz McDonald’s PMC Artisan jewellery. What does PMC stand for, you may ask. Well, it stands for Precious (and not in the Gollum sort of way) Metal Clay. In its raw state it can be molded into organic shapes, fired in a kiln where all organic material is burned off and you are left with a 99.99% pure silver piece of jewellery. PMC jewellery does not tarnish, and anyone with a base metal sensitivity will be able to wear these beautiful pieces. These will be on the website for purchase shortly…….maybe even this afternoon :D

Robi Smith – Artist in the Window, this Saturday, February 25th, 1-4

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Robi Smith will be our Artist in the Window this Saturday, February 25th, between 1-4*, and after hearing about what she will be doing, we are more than excited! Robi is a print artist and she will be creating a multi-colored linocut print, similar to the owl print we have shown here. These prints are made by hand, not digitally reproduced, and therefore are much more valuable than many of your brightly coloured prints found at other stores. They are time consuming to make; the lino is hand cut into the shape, and then each colour is individually applied to the paper.  The making of this owl has been well documented on Robi’s blog, and is a good read! Personally, I am really interested to see the technique that she uses so that she doesn’t over cut, which is what I am always afraid of doing. Robi says she doesn’t know what kind of an animal she will be making, only that it will be a local animal, fish or bird. I love an artist who doesn’t give it all away :)

Robi is a self-taught artist from Vancouver, Canada, and her work reflects her love of the North Eastern Pacific Ocean and its creatures. Her practice is driven by her concern for pollution, climate change and over-fishing.

*Please note this event starts later than our usual time, 1 pm, not 11 am.

Rudi is a metal and leather artist working in Vancouver. As he says in his video, he is enmeshed in Celtic art, loves the patterns and the craft, and incorporates the motifs into everything he makes. We are so lucky to have Alexa Ludeman knitting in our window this Saturday for her second time! As you know from our previous post, she is an expert dyer and infuses yarns with rich colours in configurations that resemble the natural and built world around her. But did you know she is also a published author? Her book entitled 9 Months of Knitting offers up patterns and advice on knitting for a wee one and family. Are you looking for the perfect Holiday gift for someone who is expecting? Alexa will be on hand to personalize the book, making this gift extra special! Perfect for Grandmas and Aunties too!

Robbie Vergara – Artist in the Window, this Saturday, November 26, 11-4

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

We are thrilled to have Robbie Vergara working on his screen printed t-shirts and other textile items as our next Artist in the Window! Also a filmmaker, Robbie has incorporated a wide array of inspiration into his line, and specifically likes to work with 18th and 19th Century Biology drawings. Names like “King of the Raven”, “Happy Bat Face” and “Golden Guns” speak to his perfect blend of bold graphics and surreal imagery. Robbie pulls the ink on a screen to make each individual item so that what looks “the same” is uniquely different, and that process makes these items special in a world of digitally printed items. Wondering what I am talking about? Come down to the store this Saturday, November 26th betweeen 11 and 4 for a look and a chat!

Join Robbie on his Facebook Page here.
